Her name was Kiran, and even though I haven’t seen her in over thirty years, I well remember the palpitations of my adolescent heart every time I saw her. She went to the same Mass and sat in exactly the same pew every Sunday. You’ve probably already guessed that I went to the same Mass and sat three pews behind her. Like most parishioners, we came and left every Sunday without any social interaction. I wish my childhood parish had a coffee and donut hour after Mass on Sundays because maybe then I would have had the opportunity to actually meet Kiran!
We are so blessed to have a parish with so many opportunities for social and spiritual interaction. Of course, the most important thing we do together is embrace God who is present in the Word, Sacrament, and the assembly at Sunday Mass. It’s also important for us to mingle with one another after Mass and sometimes even share a meal. You can help by volunteering to service the coffee hours after the 8:00 am and 10:30 am Masses on Sunday. We need more volunteers, so do contact Jackie Michels at [email protected] or call the Parish Office if you’re interested in more information.
Worshiping God and our commitment to one another are two essential aspects of living our faith. Good liturgy and hospitality are what facilitates prayer and commitment. As with all things we do well, can’t we always think of ways to do them better? I am open to any other ideas you have to help all of us know God and one another more fully. Although God is not calling us to repeat the palpitations of our adolescent hearts, I do believe God invites us to open our hearts more lovingly for all our sisters and brothers in our knowledge and service to one another.
