On Saturday March, 10, three St. Ambrose seventh graders competed at the Prince George’s County National History Day Finals at Dr. Henry Wise High School in Upper Marlboro, MD. The competitors were Aivas Humphries, Maggie Tremble and Phoebe Stewart Carter. Aivas received First Place in the Junior Division Exhibit Category. He will advance to the state finals at UMBC. Maggie Tremble received a special award for her use of primary sources. Great work St. Ambrose historians.
National History Day (NHD) is a national competition for junior and senior high school. The competition culminates with the national finals held each year at the University of Maryland-College Park. Each year a different theme is given for the competition. This year the theme is “Revolution, Reaction, Reform.” The students then choose a topic to fit the theme. The students’ topics were:
Aivas: Prison and Asylum reform in the 19th century
Maggie: The change in presidential press coverage from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Richard Nixon
Phoebe: The change in the world of art brought by Pablo Picasso and his creation of cubism.
