Basketball was the eighth sacrament in the parish where I grew up in New York. The McGuire brothers of Knicks fame were from the same neighborhood. Our gym and playground were in constant use and became the center of neighborhood activity on weekends and summer nights. My own status in school was ingratiated somewhat by my older sister Clare who was among the group of parish girls revered for their acumen on the court. Parish CYO teams kept many kids connected to parish life.
Because I grew up in a parish with an active sports program I know how it can be a great way to unite people of the parish (putting aside, of course, the petty arguments parents can get into over their children's games). As kids we'd just ride our bikes up to church to watch or play in a game. Now I am amazed at how far some kids travel for a single competition (and more amazed at the parents who have the patience to drive them!).
As important as sports are in our lives, I am especially impressed by parents who make faith a priority in the lives of their children. I know how tough it must be to keep it all in balance but there are many of you who know that spiritual development is also a main concern. Making sure children are celebrating Sunday Eucharist and receiving Catholic religious education is vital for children to understand who they are and why they exist. Where else outside the home do children get the message that God created them and loves them very much? Thank you so much to the parents who understand both the importance of sports and the priority of faith.
