Art
Our art classes follow the tenets of Teaching for Artistic Behavior through projects that encompass a wide variety of materials and media. There are many opportunities for choice-based learning, and students are encouraged to explore their individual voice rather than imitating others’ work. Students explore the elements of art and principles of design. We work in a variety of processes and materials, with the goal of process-oriented, personal explorations and expansions of each student’s creativity. Students are exposed to a range of artists and art periods, but the focus is on more contemporary, widely diverse artmakers. All students attend art class once a week.
Music
Our music classes focus on healthy singing habits for young voices (especially breathing), composition, and movement. We work with a variety of pitched and non-pitched percussion, as well as recorders and ukuleles. Our studies include Orff, Kodaly, and Dalcroze methodologies in order to meet the needs of the whole student. As in the art classroom, our music classes work to develop artistic thinking in creative problem-solving abilities through both lower- and higher-order thinking skills and social-emotional learning. All students attend music class once a week.
Physical Education
In our physical education classes, students learn to demonstrate competency and proficiency in movement forms and apply movement concepts and principles in learning and further developing their motor skills. Students will also learn to lead a physically active lifestyle to achieve and help maintain physical fitness while understanding that physical activity provides an opportunity for enjoyment. All students attend physical education class twice per week.
Spanish
Our Spanish classes provide an opportunity for students to learn how to better communicate and to learn about Spanish-speaking cultures around the world. Elementary school students learn through songs, stories, projects, and speaking practice. Middle school students prepare for high school foreign language programs. All students attend Spanish class once a week.
Primary Library
Pre-K through fifth grade students visit the library once a week and borrow books they can enjoy at home. Library classes are planned to complement the curriculum in the classroom, help students attain library skills, and promote an appreciation of reading. We encourage all our students to take time to read every day.
